In late May of 2013 Venus, Jupiter and Mercury came together to form a brilliant planetary trio in the northwestern sky after sunset. Each night the planets moved closer to each other until on May 26 they formed a triangle 2 degrees on each side. Then, with each passing night, the gap between the planets started to widen and soon the triangle was gone.
This image captures the planetary trio on May 27, 2013. Venus is the brilliant white member of the trio. Jupiter is to the left of Venus with Mercury at the top of the triangle.
